How and Why to Promote Heart Healthy Training in Your Gym

By Aaron Eisberg

You have a sincere interest in the health and well-being of your fitness club members. To the end of seeing your members succeed with their fitness goals and achieve better health in the process, you likely put much thought into how to promote heart healthy training in your gym. Are there certain types of exercises that are better than others for promoting heart health?

Certain types of exercises pack a more heart healthy punch.

Heart Healthy Training Makes the Grade

A recent study by the American Council on Exercise reveals that TRX Suspension Training may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by as much as 89 percent. How does TRX Suspension Training work? TRX is a full-body workout that improves flexibility and balance while building lean muscle and improving core stability.

Clubindustry.com explains:
"TRX workouts pit the exerciser's body weight against gravity through hundreds of possible exercises, such as lunges, squats, push-ups, and chest presses. While engaged, study participants ultimately burned an average of 400 calories per session or 1,200 per week (over three sessions), according to ACE. This satisfies the 150 to 400-calorie benchmark established by the American College of Sports Medicine."

The results of the ACE study seem to dovetail nicely with the prevailing wisdom among fitness industry pros that combining weight-bearing exercise with aerobic activity has a heart-healthy benefit. While a 2011 study concluded with aerobic training is the most efficient mode of exercising to improve cardiovascular health overall, it also noted that a combination of aerobic exercise and weight training represents the most balanced and best way to approach heart health through exercise.

Equipping Members for Heart Training Success

So, how can you keep your members engaged with heart healthy strategies? It all boils down to providing the education and equipment they need to succeed. On the education front, you can teach members of your fitness club via your personal trainers, special classes, and even email campaigns.

For instance, sponsoring mini-seminars about the importance of heart rate tracking, how to use a heart rate monitor, or how to calculate your ideal heart rate training zone are all good ways to keep your members engaged and focused on cardiovascular health.

Other ideas include classes about proper nutrition and its role in heart health, along with helpful tips and reminders about heart healthy lifestyles.
